New build house in Chester

Jar Architecture was asked to design a new build contemporary house on the outskirts of Chester, Cheshire area. The initial brief was for a chalet bungalow to downsize into, it needed to be well insulated and thus cost efficient to run.

The project was in a conservation area so the design needed to be carefully thought through, taking note of the existing architecture, setting and heritage of the area. We decided to undertake pre application discussions as we were asking a lot of the site and the design was being pushed outside of anything in the local area.

Following the submission of the pre application and very constructive dialogue with the conservation officer on site, we went with a much more contemporary approach for the full planning application.

We put a mood board together for client approval of final finishes, using the Wienerberger Olde Cheshire Red Multi for the bricks, Tata steel anthracite cladding, western red cedar cladding and slate roof, see below for plans and elevations.

Due to the work put in prior to final submission, planning was approved very quickly and we moved onto building control approval and full construction drawings to tender.

The client wanted to use a timber frame for the main structure, this was then clad with the Cheshire red multi bricks. The timber frame allows for a quicker build time and more control over the detailing to keep it more thermally efficient.

We love to get light into our spaces and the main stairwell double height glass window is a lovely feature. We also provided two dormers to the front bedrooms creating lovely large window seats.

We managed the project through to completion.
